The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
